The vegan shoes are all organic fibers, and don't usually have rubber or plastic in them because its really hard to get chemicals that don't effect animals or are harmful to the environment. So vegan shoes usually have a natural bottom like hemp or twine, and not rubber or plastic.

Hey! I thought I might be able to help you out considering I'm Vegan and know a little about this stuff. The vegan lifestyle practiced by millions around the world extends beyond a meatless and dairy-free diet. Prompted by a desire to avoid using animal-based materials such as leather or snakeskin, many vegans choose footwear often called vegetarian or vegan shoes. Vegan shoes are constructed from non-leather materials such as canvas, hemp, polyurethane, rubber, Spandex or cotton. There are also composite materials used in vegetarian shoes that duplicate the feel and appearance of cow leather or suede. Individual shoe companies often have a proprietary blend of cotton and polyurethane which they market as a vegan-friendly leather substitute.

Who said they aren't (that's a real question: who really did say they aren't). And did they provide any evidence? Was Tom's asked to comment?

Some glues aren't vegan, but I'm guessing that most of the vegan shoe stores around go out of their way to make synthetic glues. If Tom's advertise as vegan they should too. If they don't, they could be charged with misleading advertising, but there would need to be evidence.

Veganism is about not using animal products, rather than environmentalism, so enviro-friendly products shouldn't be an issue. I'd be interested to find out if you have any links.... Usually animal groups are pretty good with this sort of thing.
