I'm 13 and i've been wearing glasses since I was in like 4th grade. I don't really think that glasses suit my face very well and I would like you start wearing eye contacts. I want to ask my mom to start wearing them but I need some pros and cons to try and convince her.

If you re looking for an honest answer, i work in an opticians full time and can give you some pro s and con s. Firstly contact lenses are excellent as you do not have to constantly have the glasses on the face where with nose pads can leave marks and if you have a high prescription the lenses can be very heavy. Contact lenses do take a while to get used to, some people can be fine with them straight away while others may struggle at first. They do require alot of patience and time practicing taking in and out. But if you like me, don t like wearing glasses they are a great alternative. Generally it s not advisable to wear contact lenses for swimming, showering them or sleeping in them unless you have night contact lenses as said in another comment. You can have daily lenses which you can use for a day and throw away (if you re worried about loosing them and don t want to bother with all the cleaning). Or you can get monthly lenses which last up to a month but require cleaning of the lenses. For the person who said don t get near heat or they will burn your eyes that is a load of rubbish. Unless you re working in an extreme heat environment (above the level of boiling point) or are dangling your head near an open flame for a great deal of time, you have nothing to worry about. Most places have a free trial of contact lenses so why not give it a go there are hundreds of different types out there!

Hi, I am your age and I also have been wearing glasses since the 4th grade. About 3 months ago, I got contacts, and from my personal experience, I can give you many pros and cons.

Let's start with cons. Unfortunately, and truth be told, putting on contacts is NOT an easy task. You will go through many obstacles until you are able to get both contacts in your eye. First time I tried wearing contacts, I was sitting there for an hour and not being able to get a single contact in my eye. Now, I can do both eyes in about a minute. It definitely requires lots of patience and practice, but don't worry, you'll figure out your own "strategy" one day. Also, it requires lots of responsibility. If you can't keep your own room clean, chances are that you most likely aren't responsible enough. That being said, you may have to wait a while before you can handle contacts, but at 13, you'll probably be fine. Another thing: You may experience pain with contacts. Sometimes, they'll disappear into other parts of your eye, and you'll have to try to get it out. Nevertheless, it's a lot of hard work.

There are many pros, too! Glasses can easily get fogged up, and it's a pain to constantly be cleaning them. Also, they can be scratched and broken. Back when I wore eyeglasses, i'd always have trouble finding them too, but with disposable weekly contacts, they never get lost! Also, contacts can help you see without giving you a different look and are great if you're involved in sports. Contacts are also great if you apply makeup and most people believe they look "prettier" with contacts.

Good luck with your decision! Ask me if you have any questions.

Hi! I'm also thirteen, and I used to have glasses but they proved to be really uncomfortable. You should get contacts. if you get night contacts like I did, there are mostly pros:

-You wear them at night, before you go to sleep, therefore you won't feel them, because you're sleeping(obviously)

-You take them off in the morning, but you will still be able to see clearly because the contacts shape your pupil or something, making light bend and focus properly... I don't know! (I know, so scientific). This is great because you can then see perfectly clearly without anything in front of or on your eye(s). I know how annoying glasses are. Sliding off your nose. Hitting them will hurt if the frame digs into your skin though that rarely happens, and for some people, the things that go on the top of their nose will tickle.

-Usually when you buy them they come with around two or three replacements per eye

-wearing contacts actually improve your vision. My left eye was 300 and my right eye was 250, but now my left is 150 and my right is 125

-They are not easy to lose as long as you put them in their contact case, but I mean, where else would you put them? Your cupboard? The sink? So again, highly unlikely to lose.

Cons:

-night contacts are hard, but they are made to fit your eyes so you don't feel anything within like two days, mostly because you have to get used to it, but it's not uncomfortable or painful. You could get day contacts because they are soft however it will take a lot longer to improve your vision. However, since you wear them during the day, dust could get under and it would be quite irritating. Night contacts on the other hand are actually quite comfortable.

-You do have to buy contact solution instead of just soaking them in water however contacts are better for your vision so I think it's worth it

-hmm as long as you don't roughly handle them, pinch them, throw them around, squeeze them, they shouldn't break but that goes without saying, why would you do that in the first place..?

-yeah that's it

I hope this was helpful

Pros:

No annoying glasses

You may look prettier

Cons:

Extra money than glasses

If you keep eyes open for too long it feels as if the contacts are falling out and it gets blurry

Can be very uncomfortable if not put on properly

Easy to lose

You have to take on the responsibility of wearing them and keeping up with the gear. It's not rocket science, but does take some thought and care. You'll need to keep up with cleaning them (unless you get disposables). You may need an extra pair of glasses for backup (when eyes are tired or itchy) and maybe a pair of nonprescription sunglasses (if the sun bothers you). The good thing about contacts is that you can feel free when playing sports and don't have to worry about losing or breaking eyeglasses. I wore contacts from age 16 to about 37.

Cons: they suck to put in, you can scratch your eyeball with the lenses (it happened to my friend), your putting yourself in more of a risk for infection, the get dry during the day, you cant really scratch your eye if they itch cause they move around. If you get the monthly ones you have to make sure and take good care of them cause they well dry up if you don't check if the case has solution.

Pros: everybody can see your mad makeup skills & you get to watch 3D movies comfortably.

I have been wearing glasses since I was 13 also, I'm 21 now but i mostly wear glasses but i do have daily contacts when i feel like putting them in, like when i want to wear sunglasses or when I'm going swimming.

I've been in this position before

Pros- No one looks better with glasses (contrary to what they say), very hard to break/ lose contact lenses when they can just be put back in.

Cons- Take l longer to put in/on than glasses, can become dry

Conclusion- Choose contacts, I made that decision and will never regret it!!

This is not a "pro and con" debate. At that level, it's pretty evenly matched. Many people believe that glasses are inexpensive and contacts are not, perhaps that's the obstacle here and where your focus should be, but, more likely, it's just personal taste. My wife likes glasses on me, I hate them...I don't wear them.

Keep up the good fight, you'll win sooner or later.

Advantages of contact lenses

Contact lenses (contacts) provide predictable vision correction.

They eliminate the need to wear eyeglasses all the time.

Contacts provide better side vision than eyeglasses.

A wide range of lens types is available to meet individual needs.

Contacts cost more than eyeglasses but less than surgery (although surgery may be less expensive in the long run if it allows you to go without glasses or contacts).

Some people prefer the way they look when wearing contacts rather than eyeglasses.

Disadvantages of contact lenses

Cleaning and disinfecting your lenses can be complicated and inconvenient. You need good hand-eye coordination to clean, insert, and remove the lenses.

There is an increased risk of corneal infections, scratches, and scrapes.

Lenses can be easily damaged or lost.

Some people can't wear contact lenses comfortably. After going through the initial discomfort and expense of contact lenses, some people continue to find them uncomfortable or otherwise unsatisfactory.

Wearing contact lenses can cost at least $150 per year, including the costs of cleaning and disinfecting solutions. People who have to replace their lenses or change prescriptions regularly may spend much more. The cost of the lenses varies according to the type of lens you wear.

In some work areas, you will need to use protective eyewear if you wear contact lenses.

Pro- Can move around more easily, don't have to worry about them being broken, lost or scratched like glasses, aren't tight on your face/nose, and you can lay down without glasses being annoying!

Con- Dry eyes, can't fall asleep without taking them off, infections

Pros: -contacts don't crack like glasses, and if you scratch them you almost always have a backup pair

-they don't cause acne like glasses can

-easy to put in, not even noticeable

-won't fall off when you go on rollercoasters haha

Cons: none

I started wearing eyeglasses about 13, all through HS. Then, by age 21 I met my BF/husband who wore them and I asked what they were, so I got a pair. He's got astigmatism, so he wears the hard lenses, and I am nearsighted so I wore the disposable soft lenses. Your doctor will tell you more about them, once you get your eyes examined & proper way to clean them and the brand to wear.

I've worn contacts for over 30 years. I recently stopped because I'm lazy to put them on, while doing crafts (easier for me to see close-up) while taking care of my parents. After they died, I just never put them on, and I've got new spares bought, never opened. But recently I got my eyes exam and my doctor told me, my eyes had improved. So, if YOU DON'T NEED THEM, it's better in the long run not to start. The more you see your doctor, the more he prescribed you stronger lenses, the MORE your eyes get weaker & weaker. I used to be able to see across the room, but now I have to wear my glasses to see them focused! Just saying. My dad when he was in his 98, he could see better than me, because he never wore contact lenses! We have the same vision.

I'm 13 too and I've been wearing contacts for maybe 2 years now. I have horrible vision btw. Anyways. Contacts can be great, but they aren't for everyone since they can be such a big responsibility. You have to clean them and take them out when you sleep. For me it's worth it though because I love feeling like I don't have something on my face.

-Get daily's contacts if shes worried about you getting an eye infection from sleeping in them. Daily's are more expensive but i think they are worth it. Less eye infections/problems/dry eye

-your glasses hurt your face after long periods of them ( i know mine do!)

-you can say you just want the contacts for when you go out with your friends and you'll wear your glasses to school

- you can wear sunglasses

Well, I know that glasses annoy me, so I think they are a good alternative. Contacts are good for people who want to move around a bit more, since glasses fall off your face 24/7. Although they are good in that concept, they can irritate your eyes if you sleep with them or don´t take them out for a while.

You have to be very hygienic otherwise you may get an eye infection. After hours of wearing them it may strain your eyes. Pros if you think they'll make you look pretty it's worth it plus if you dont like them after you run out just wear your glasses agin
2015-11-04 10:54:02 UTC
pro- you can see and some people look better

con- they're hard to take care of and they get dry in your eyes

I wear them and have these problems but still like them.

Your appearance should not matter to you. Glasses are not as much of a health hazard since there have been many reports of life threatening parasites that live on eye contacts and you mitigate those chances by wearing glasses

everybody has pointed out a lot of pros and cons but there is one CRUCIAL thing nobody ever knows if the contacts receive any extra heat they will melt to your eyeballs and you have two options (if your eyes aren't damaged enough you can have surgery and have them cut pulled or however the doctor gets them off or you go blind for the rest of your life my soon to be step mother is an Optometrist and I'm a trauma surgeon I've seen hundreds of ppl come through the doors screaming about how a fire melted their contacts to their eyes to put it in prospective image a chunk of plastic melt it and let the dripping melted plastic fall into your eye that’s essentiality what's happening

Pro is that you can now see clearly, the cons are it's uncomfortable

They're more expensive in the long run. Easier to lose. Harder to put it. Can potentially cause you to injure your eye (not likely though).

They also provide you with a better field of vision and show your face to the world.
