Real diamonds are sometimes set in stainless steel, as well as titanium, tungsten, and other industrial metals. It's the latest fashion trend among high-tech people. Please don't try to scratch anything with it. You can damage a perfectly good diamond that way. Even though diamonds are "hard" in the sense that they can scratch any other stone, they are also fragile and can chip. Besides, fake diamonds can scratch glass.
Just take it to a jeweler. They don't charge anything to tell you if it's real or not.

People don't typically set real diamonds in stainless steel. You can go test at a jewelry store to be absolutely sure. They won't charge you.

Diamonds won't be able to dent and they won't leave a scrape mark if you scrape it on something...

Try and cut a piece of glass and give it a definite shape.
