I bought an Anchor Blue belt that said it was "Manmade Leather". I first thought my belt was made out of human skin. :) But now, it turns out it is imitation leather. Why is it called "Manmade leather", not imitation leather? Is Manmade leather a brand name?

The word imitation has a stigma to it. Most items that are labeled as imitation are considered cheap. Look at the imitation watches or imitation purses that mimic an expensive brand. Leather is an expensive material and used in high end clothing. When trying to create a product that looks like it, you would not want it to be thought of as cheap. Calling it manmade leather sounds better and does not associate it with being a cheap product. If you look at the early imitation leather products (late 70s to early 90s) it looked extremely fake and more like plastic. It cracked and peeled. That stuff was the epitome of cheap and looked down upon. Some of the new products are very hard to tell apart from real leather. So they changed the description to manmade leather which makes it more appealing to the public. It is all marketing.

manmade mudt means that it was made by man through factory processes or it could be like and alloy, just not with metals. it also makes it sound a little better than saying "this is fake" or "imitation"

"Manmade leather" is 100% real leather, and its sewn and put together by hand, and "immitation leather", is not 100%, and has added things, and made by machines.
