Don't get discouraged. I've met designers who can't draw; there are other ways to get your ideas across. You can cut out pictures and collage (I've seen it done with really interesting results) so don't be afraid to experiment and don't be afraid to try drawing! Even if your not perfect now, practice will make you better and most designers I've known don't draw incredibly realistically, some of them even use templates or trace!

You do not need to sew to be a designer. Yes a basic knowledge helps but sewing is not your job. You design the clothing and then your production team will sew them for you. The designer and technician need each other and it's very hard (although not impossible) to do both.

So what should you do? Research, research, research. Learn about fashion trends, historical periods of fashion and anything else you can get your hands on. Practice drawing but don't get hung up on being perfect, focus on expressing your ideas creatively. Look into schools and start putting together a portfolio of your best ideas. Most of all, don't give up!

Basic interest in fashion, drawing and sketching, sewing is a must. And if you are really interested in these you will surely find a way to learn the skills. If you haven't done it so far then may be Fashion Design is not for you ! You can approach career counselling and find out what would be the right career for you. Fashion Design is a very very competitive field and requires loads of hard work, and how much ever glamorous it may look for outside, it is one of the least glamorous field of study if you get on to the back end of fashion. So if you are not too much interested or do not have the right skill sets required, I would suggest not to go for it at all.

any one who asks this question on yahoo answers is never going to be a fashion designer. if you cant draw or sew, then i think its time to pick a new career.. you dont just wake one day as a fashion designer ESPECIALLY if you cant do either of the 2 main things that they do.....

if you have separation problems, and have too high of hopes for yourself, then take a class, learn to do at least one of the 2 things...

Go to a fashion designer school, in your area. Watch Heidi Klum's reality show so you can get an idea what goes in the fashion industry "Project Runway".

I can't draw but I know a lot about fashion! All over my home, my stained glass windows, outside my garden, inside my home, my quilting now my funky Japanese flowers hair clips & pins (selling them), all speak 'fashion' and the way I wear my clothes & style my hair, screams 'fashion'.
