Question:
How can I look like myself while staying in dress code?

Ok, I go to the same school as Glasses-Chan! Dress code is collard shirts tucked in and belted, skirts below finger tips or any pants. Accessories are allowed but no unnatural hair dye or facil piercings other than ears...yep so if you have ideas help!

I would wear different colored tights, wild socks and shoes. Definitely get you a funky bunch of pins to wear. Wear bracelets. Can you get away with wearing a crystal or sticker on your face? I wear a crystal stuck at the outer corner of my eye (I wear glasses - so it is not readily apparent unless I tip my head). Fun colors of fingernail polish and crystals on your nails.

On your back pack - clip different charms, a stuffed animal, etc.

Carry a fun purse.

My son was in that situation, and he kept a little alien doll on a leash and carried it attached to his back pack - and everyone remembered it - teachers included. He also wore black nailpolish, black eyeliner. He even wore a skirt (one time) It was funny, because it was the uniform skirt (he borrowed it from a girl), so the school couldn't do anything about it. He wore it with socks and black boots. NO - he is not gay - just a very individual kind of guy (Hooray for that). Good luck - don't let the establishment get you down.

Hair clips and jewelry can make a difference, but basically, the idea of having a dress code is to encourage people to make PERSONALITY their main style feature, not dress at all. If that bothers you, you might ask why. Are you one of those who thinks personality is just an excuse for people who are not pretty? No; pretty is just an excuse for people who have no personality!

Seriously, can you get over the idea that you need to distinguish yourself? Do you really think all the young women in your school are alike, and you will not stand out? Are you sure you want to stand out, in the sense of being noticed by the school administration or teachers as being a nuisance? How about cultivating a very quiet, serene personality that boys have to work at getting to know you -- they have to put themselves out a bit. It's good for them, you know!

It is all about accessories my dear for your situation. You should wear any earrings, necklaces, headbands (very in style now)colored tights or patterned tights (also in style!), funky shoes (so many shoes to choose from!), rings, bracelets that reflect your personality and personal style. Even experiement with your hair do's - like a cute funky play on a ponytail (look online and in magazines!) You can really work it if you invest in even a few of these things. Experiment - and you can still stand out in the crowd. You just have to be a little more inventive and creative! You can do it girl! Good Luck!

Change what "yourself" is - i.e., quit being slime and toe the line with the dress code in school & out.

Just kidding :)

Though really, what "yourself" is probably will change several times in the next decade or so - until you find your real self which will probably closely resemble that person you were sometime as a child before people and the environment and peers influenced you so much.

I didn't see her answer before I posted mine, but Diana & I seem to be saying pretty much the same thing - all the weirdos look the same.

Try a plaid or a solid pleated skirt with long socks with a funky pattern. Wear your hair really cute and different I don't know what length but go beyond what you ususally would do to your hair to stand out. Wear contacts to make your eyes pop. And since it's going on winter, the furry snow boots are in so that would be a really cute school look. Just try to keep it fashionably different but not tacky, because it's a thin line. Try different looks and play with it, you're a teen ager so you have more leverage on fun and funky fashion.

my old school had a dress code like that, only skirts had to be to the knees and no jeans. they wouldn't even let you dye your hair black.

anyways, answering your question: knee socks are awesome, painted nails help with whatever look you're going for, shoes say alot about you (i love my converse), and use alot of accessories like belts and jewelry and an awesome purse (i love vintage ones like from the thrift store). it's pretty hard to find collard shirts and stuff, but there are some pretty cool ones out there. oh, and also me and my friends always wore ties and safety pins last year....just a thought. good luck.

Accessories are allowed... that's it! I went to a nun catholic school all my life and the only way for me to stand out was accessories! Forget the skirt! I don't know about you but in my school they made us kneel and the skirt's hem had to touch the ground! How did I get notice? Always keep your legs nice, shaved and shiny and get cute socks. My shoes always had heels and I attached to them anything coool I could find, even stickers! It wouldn't be as cool in out-of-school wear, but IN-School it worked like a charm. Think about it, what else could we do to make our uniforms unique?

I also worked the hair. The school had a thing about allowing only hair accessories in the school colors (white and blue, boooring). I found some cool fluffy clippy's (they were blue) to attach to my cute pig-tails, and some nice big Kurt Cobain's (white) sunglasses to wear everyday.

My point is, bend the rules a little. After all, they say what's allowed, but there's always a loophole or two. Drive them nuts!

Have Fun!

One can always display their great sense of style no matter what type of uniform one has to wear. Since you have to wear collard shirts, go buy the type of shirt that looks great on you. The same goes for your shoes and everything else, you have to wear black shoes, but they did not specify what brand and style of shoe that you have to wear. In wearing what looks great on you, you will not only feel great about your appearance everyday, but you will show the world that not only do you have a great since of fashion, but that you have style. I do understand about the peer pressure to look good, so in doing this you free yourself to do the very best that you can in school, have fun, because these are the best times of your life,,,, you are now going to school with a person that will be in your wedding, be the god parent to your children, cry with you when your parents die, be there with you though thick and thin. So laugh often, love truly, and dance like nobody is watching you!!!!!!!!

Hi! Yeahh you should switch schools ;p but like others have said there are ways to make your outfit cute by just bending the rules ;). Dangling earrings are soo cute & will add an extra pop to any outfit. Or maybe a bright red belt or any bright color of your choice :]. And try adding a couple layers of necklaces unless you like braclets then wear big chunky ones piled on each other--but don't add too many accesories like for example if you wear a lot of necklaces go easy on the braclets and rings ;p. If you have bangs clip them up on the top of your head with a couple of bobby pins to keep them out of your face--plus it looks really cute! Or maybe even a side ponytail ;). And skinny jeans look really cute tucked in boots ;p. And one last outfit suggestion is maybe a long tunic with some cute lace leggings--if you have some flats then those would be great too x]. I hope I was of some help ;p!

Here's a story:

I grew up in the 80's. Hated all of it, from the baggy pants to the jelly shoes to all the stupid music. The 80's to me were nothing more than "let's see how stupid we can look and still call it fashion!"

So I went for the punk/industrial scene instead. Sure, I had the spiked leather jacket, but I never went all-out for the "punk" look. I was just more comfortable the way I was.

Today I still listen to punk, industrial, electronica, goth and ska. I make my own path and choose my own destiny. I work in the medical industry so I have to look professional, but it saddens me to see all these 15-year olds sporting Dead Kennedys T-shirts and trying to be "old school" punk when they have no clue.

The point is that even looking professional, I can still be who I want. Punk isn't a fashion statement, it's who you are. So just because you are forced to wear stupid uniforms there is no reason why you can't still be YOU. if the uniform changes your inner being, THEN you've got problems!

I may be off center on this, but ...

I thought you were who you are despite what you wear?

Clothes are just accessories to your personality. If your only personality is only what you wear, who are YOU? There are only so many places for piercings, tattoos, so many colors whether for hair or skin or clothes. After a while even the 'weirdos' start looking all the same. Learn who your are, and be you, nothing else will ever be YOU!

I can't give you an answer for that at all. How would you 'look like yourself' otherwise? If you're rather goth-y and I tell you to wear lime green eyeliner, I haven't helped at all. Maybe, if you ask the question again and give us a link to a picture...

It doesn't have to be a pick of you (who wants to pick up a stalker?). It can be just a set of clothes you wear OUTSIDE of school laid out on a bed or hung up. You could even post links to your fav online stores or links to brands you wear.

If I had an idea of who you were clothes-wise, THEN I could give you suggestions.

Mix and match with accesories, bags, hair accesories, and make-up. If you are fed up with having to tuck in your shirt, put a big belt around your waistline to make it look belted without having to look like a nerd. Also, socks are super cool and fun to mix and match. Wear high socks with a pair of Converse Hi-Tops. Put patches on your skirts and pants to make them stand out. Hope that helps!

When you are in school, abide by the dress code. Pretend you are a character in a role playing game. Your character is actually interested in school, does her homework and tried to get good grades. Of course she has a wild side, which she feels free to express when she is home (and not doing her homework) or on weekends.

Dearie, you don't lack ideas from fellow school going sufferers to have you come as close to your look as possible while staying in dress code.

Accept that schools dress code teach us the concept of basic conformity. Just keep the cost of balancing school code with personal id to a min. Remember, there will be others who will always keep you from being too much of yourself. Wheterh this comes from an authority figure or a fellow student, consider factors like words spoken that hurt but do no longterm harm, what you are asked to give up now vs what you will gain in the long-term.

At the end of the day, if you're still able to breathe easy without holding on to protracted resentments, you are learning all the lessons that go with living with yourself and others in a world that's getting smaller in 'space' and narrowing culture to just the basics (not altogether 'bad' too). Still, I'm not against people who sport tattoos or color their hair, even tho' I would never attempt to do with my body or hair, esp at my age (I'm not telling...).

hope this helps....

Well r u trying to express urself for halloween or just overall? Halloween you can get some make-up and powder and make yourself look extremely pale.

If you want to be you, dont worry about what your wearing. After school outside that world you can define your independence. And stand out with your friends.

While in school, try different hair styles, and just remember that if they're being pricks then just wear what u feel like to be mean.

Try playing the uniform up with jewelry...scarves...hair accessories, anything you think will make it look more "like you"...that's what I did sometimes when I had to wear uniforms. But the best accessory is the confidence you have when you wear it...(but of course the other accessories help too)

wear a Polo shirt in a color that expresses yourself, a trendy skirt or pants that u would wear as if u were going out to the mall with some girlfriends, and some jewelery that is just u! i say that u should stay in the dress code but just out of it, just to annoy the principal, teacher, secretary, etc that stresses the most over it lol. i doubt that they would notice an untucked shirt so yea that too...and then any belt u want. good luck!!!!

PS if u REALLY want to piss off the skool board wear ripped jeans ;)

OH honey i feel your pain! I went to Catolic school for twelve years and none of us could express ourselves in the way that we wanted to wthout restriction. I was a punk kid in those days so I truly believed in non comformity. I put on bracelets, like ones with lots of color ,(spikes werent allowed), when I wore my school skirts I would where cute tights under it. I made sure to pretty myself up by making sure that my hair was nice and styled all the time and shoes! Oh My God , shoes are the perfect way to make yourself unique. I loved my chucks and my mary janes!

i went to a school that had the same uniform. can you wear make up? that can be very expressive of who you are... also jewlry, i had lots of buttons on my book bag as there were no stipulations on those (just no swear words - i knew i'd get busted on those). there were stipulations on shoes and socks as well, but it was on color so you could still pick shoes that essentially fit you, maybe just not in color. we had one girl shave her head and get in trouble for that - but you cold probably cut it just about anyway you want. and remember it says "no unnatural hair color" so if you're blond you can have black hair, or red, or someone else's natural color. (they actually changed that rule at OLP because of me, it's not close to your own natural color). and any personal item - your pencil box, pens, pencils, erasers, etc. anything that you can get something different or draw on it i did. even in uniform everyone knew what i was like without me opening my mouth... well, kinda i swore A LOT then.
2006-10-20 18:29:41 UTC
Where the bell pants to your calves with boots. Collard shirts can be the embrodered type, too. I saw that once on a girl, looked really cute. Do you have to wear khakis, or black or any kind of pants like jeans? Where your hair red. It is a natural hair color. Black is natural, too, so dye it black and wear it spiky straight either way! Have like 5 sets of earring on your ears. Good luck. Oh, lots of cool belts. Where one looped and one not looped , too big and to the side. My dad is a well known taylor, I have loads of ideas.

How does colored fabric define you? What are you without the clothes? Are you less of a person with unfasionable clothes? Wearing uniforms is the best way a school has in preventing superficial behavior and thoughts. Experiment. Wear "bad" clothes for a week and see if you are the same person.
2006-10-20 16:03:00 UTC
Okay that really sucks! But try sewing like red ribbons (If the skirt and/or pants are red etc.) around the collar of your shirt.Or maybe like a hair tassle that ties around the ponytail.Try adding numerous bracelets and bangles maybe.Something like that in my opinion be yourself but still be in dress code. : )

u can look cool even wearing ur school uniform...in our school we also have a proper dress codes and we are free to express ourselves..being free here means dress in accrdance to the place or occasion..of course hair dyes are not appropriate with uniforms...just be urself..in accordance with the dress code...what i mean is...dress accdg to d occassion or place u go....i.e. with that kind of dress code u refer..u can go out with ur hair neatly combed, ur shoes well shined...u would look better if u matchur looks with what u wear rather than match what u wear wth inappropriate things...hope this helps

i go to a catholic school with a very strict dress code, so i can relate. if you like certain designs, you can customize necklaces, bracelets, rings, earrings, or wear scarves in your hair with a print you like. if you have purse that wasn't too expensive, you can iron patches onto it and stand out a little. buttons are a good way to spruce up a boring blouse, and if you get dress-down days, wear something that expresses you and people will get to notice you that way.

3/4 length (to the elbow) the sleeves of your blazer if you have one.

Get collared button up shirts in a Victorian style if that's allowed.

Do a Google / Dogpile image search of Japanese schoolgirls and copy some of their funky styles (Converse sneaks w/ slouchy white socks?!)

Punk-rock belts, @ least two. (or one long-a$$ skinny one!)

fishnets over bright tights (you can find crazy coloured fishnets, too!)

boots with big safety pins instead of laces!

handkerchief-hem skirts!

knee-length shorts from menswear pants (cuffed hem)

WIGS!! (it's not dye.... :p)

I hope I don't get you kicked out, but these are my ideas.

ok, heres my answer. why not dress like the code says add any accesories that are allowed and then show the diversity and uniquness of yourself by your personality or if you still are hung up on how you look then maybe try and become a part of the studnet council and try and change even if it doesnt change then you have shown the authority in your school that you are confident in what you believe and have tried to settle it the bigger person way not like a rebellious brat, and maybe just maybe they will let the rules bend just a little. if you liked my answer please visit www.freewebs.com/future-b-yanairejames which is a site that was made by me for people like you to get things doen in your school and your community look into it and maybe join and start a FBA at your school and lets get things done the best and most quiet way thank you for your time if you would like you can email me at futurebyanaire1025@yahoo.com thanks

Well it depends on what "looking like myself" is. R u girly, a tomboy, gothic? If I went to that school I would wear really cool, funky accessories(try Claire's or claires.com) like huge earrings and bracelets and really long necklaces. @ my school we have to wear ID badges and instead of putting my badge on the ugly lanyard they give everyone, I clip it to my shirt, purse, or wear it with a necklace that matches my outfit.

If u r "gothic", why not add a chain to your skirt, wear one of those spiky bracelets, or wear a black collared shirt? Try: Hot topic

Tomboy? I'd suggest just going casual. Try: basically any store. I like Old Navy

Girly girls should go with pink accessories, lace cami under your collared shirt, and flip flops

For everyone: cool belts, layered shirts, funky skirts, cool hairstyles. Hope i helped!

Brooches and pins are great pick-me-ups for an outfit.

Also, with your skirts maybe you could play around with leggings.

Go with fun hair clips, sparkly, butterflys, etc. Keep your jewlery funky too.

Look out for vintage coats and sweaters. They are unique and very fashionable.

Good luck!

It's been said several times, but accessories. What kind of style are you going for? Men's ties, your mom's old scarves, and scraps of fabric can all be used in place of store-bought plastic headbands. Get creative!

Put iron on patches on everything, glittery or goth make up, colored hair extensions, and colorful shoes. Oh and you think you have it bad! The public schools where I'm from have to wear uniforms! Kaki's, polos, white sneakers or brown shoes, shirt tucked in with a belt, and a navy sweater.

Ok, I tottally go to a P. School too. And For me, I found a bunch of cool things. At the moment, my hair is firetruck red. No one has said anything to me. And if they would have, i would have asked them for Money to get the dye to dye it back. I have naturally red hair, so it wasn't too to diffrent./ :P I aslo have a bunch of pins and buttons i put into my skirt, that are pretty awesome. I roll up my sleves a lot, rings, braclets earrings etc. Shoes are always fun to decorate, I once bought some ballet flats, and put glue on them, then covered them in black sparkles, and Put some ribbon bows on them which had cool designs. To show off your personality, you have to become creative...Hopefully this helps! Don't get into too much trouble!!

Wear really cool hair accessories or jewelry that is totally you. Also you can do tons with your hair other than coloring it-just make sure it's not a distraction. We had the problem at my high school and we had no dress code. Don't forget a woman's favorite accessory, Shoes! If you can wear whatever shoe you want then you can be yourself.

First, I don't think you should define yourself by the clothes you wear. There is time outside of school to wear something that you find fashionable. Be yourself, and what you wear will not matter.
2006-10-20 10:24:06 UTC
omg! My school is the same. I'm in Indiana. This school is almost that bad. We're allowed to have facial piercings and hair dye. But everything else is the same. We also have to wear these dumb gym clothes. Oh even worse is that some ghetto person stole mine!!!! I'm in 8th grade. I was like WTF! Then they stuck candy wrappers in the gym locker !! I can't stand this nemore! !@&$# lol.

P.s. Thanx for getting me wound up about the dresscode again! Lol, JK.

Hi! A great way to express yourself would be in your book-notes covers and your school materials.

I would cover them full of pictures and drawings or poems. Hang in your bag-back some key chains or pins that mean something to you.

Express yourself freely in all those materials and you as you go to school your back-bag, your books and your pencils show your true self. And to complement accessorize yourself also if you like.

Cool makeup, jewelry, and accessorize your back pack. I have Invader Zim patches on my back pack and though somedays I don't feel like dressing up for my college classes, my backpack still screams me.

Like the first answer said be your self. Actions speak louder than words. Only in this case, actions peak louder than looks. You catch my drift?

Duct tape yourself to identify you as unique. Make yourself a belt out of that duct tape, use perminant marker to make it colorful or black and red!

I think if you pick a favourite colour - if you have one - and emphasize it so that it becomes part of your personality - esp. if it's unique like coral or fuchsia or turquoise or lime green. Can you do your nails? Don't forget the smile and laughter, and the listening ears - great way to appear attractive, no matter what you wear. :)

I go to a school that is uber stirct. I wear converse, wear pins that have to do with rebellion, I write on my notebooks with my favorite bands on it, in my locker and out I have old covers of Alternative Press Magazine, i wear skull and cross bone earrings, and I wear eyeline,. OH, and if you do your nails paint them and have them say "rock hard' or "f*** this" They won't realize what it says. lol.

good luck with that stuff!

my daughter has to do the same thing but socks are not mentioned in the dress code so we individualize her with really cool and different socks and tights

you can be your true self out of school. we all do things we don't want to but that is how we learn and grow.

just be yourself, stay cool and calm as if you don't take much effort in dressing up. Be natural!

In ur case it is kind of hard. But wat really matters is wat is on the inside not on the outside. If ur friends r true friends they would like u for wat is on the inside not on the outside. If u really have a problem then take it up with ur student council(if u have one) tell them that the dress code is not wat everyone likes. Then take action, start a potesion. If everyone gets enough signatures then u can really start something. like they say start a trend never follow one!!!Good Luck and be yourself.

NEITHER THE DRESS CODE NOR THE ACCESSORIES MAKE THE PERSON !!!

IT'S YOUR OWN INDIVIDUAL PERSONALITY THAT WILL MAKE YOU STAND OUT AS YOUR OWN SELF !!!
2006-10-20 01:09:56 UTC
just do the same thing as what you are doin,, having a dress code is not an excuse for you to change your habitual activities,,

accessorize accessorize accessorize!! express yourself with jewelry, makeup, hairstyles, etc. if you're looking for different colored hair, try those clip on colored hair pieces. that way, if they have a problem with it, you can just pull them out.

You could wear funky colored socks, wear unique make up ( if that's allowed), try new hairstyles, or you could just go to a public school.

The point of the dress code is to stop the focus on personal appearance and place it on your education. Duh.

Be yourself in school but look like yourself outside of school.
